Abstract

1,174,424. Spring operated brakes. WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE & SIGNAL CO. Ltd. 26 July, 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 37466/66. Heading F2F. In a spring-applied pneumatically-released braking system the manual control valve is in the form of a housing comprising separate upper and lower parts 2, 3 respectively, separated by spacer 4 and surmounted by a rotatable cap 5 carrying an operating handle 6. Rotation of handle 6 causes longitudinal movement of a member 8 by the action of cam surfaces (not shown) formed on members 8, 9; member 8 carries a stop collar 10 in contact with which is spring 11. A slidable piston member 12 is kept in contact with the other end of spring 11 by means of a further spring 23; an extension 14 of piston member 12 carries a valve seat 15 which in conjunction with closure member 16 forms an exhaust port. A further fixed valve seat 17, forming with closure member 18 an inlet valve, is connected to compressed air inlet port 20. Inlet valve 17/18 is biased to the closed position by spring 21 urging a retaining ring 22 against closure member 16. Over the major part of the rotation of handle 6 the arrangement acts as a self-lapping valve giving a steadily increasing pressure in chamber 24 connected to the brake cylinder: toward the end of the downward travel of member 8, however, stop collar 10 comes into engagement with extension 14 of piston member 12. Thereafter piston member 12 is forced rapidly downwards closing valve 15, 16 and opening valve 17, 18 to bring the pressure in chamber 24 up to the maximum supplied pressure: the operating point at which this occurs may be chosen by selection of the thickness of spacer 4. The arrangement is described as applied to a braking system in which the brake cylinder is double ended, the one end providing for "emergency" operation under spring control, with release via a control valve of the type described. The other end provides for normal "service" operation under pneumatic control via a separate control valve, each control valve being provided with its own reservoir (Fig. 1, not shown).
