1,174,352. Condensation polymers &c. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP. 9 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 7549/67. Heading C3R. The invention comprises polymers with units of formula where R<SP>1</SP> represents a tetravalent radical consisting of or including a mono-, di- or polycyclic aromatic or heterocyclic ring structure with four valence bonds extending each from a separate carbon atom, R<SP>2</SP> is an alkylene, arylene or heterocyclic group or combination of groups linked together directly or through a hetero atom, and the remaining nitrogen atoms are joined to further such groups or to hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic groups. The polymers are prepared by reacting a tetranitrile of formula with a diamine of formula different structures of the polymer being obtained depending on whether equimolar proportions are used or 1 mole of tetranitrile is reacted with 2 moles of diamine or 1 mole of tetranitrile is reacted with 3 moles of diamine. Alternatively, the polymers may be prepared by reacting a tautomeric tetraimine of formula with a diamine of formula In examples polymers are obtained by reacting pyromellitonitrile with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether, with m-phenylene diamine, with pphenylene diamine, with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl methane, with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl sulphoxide and with 2,6-diamino pyridine; by reacting diamino - diiminobenzobispyrrole with pphenylene diamine, with m-phenylene diamine and with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether; by reacting tetracyanothiophene with 4,41-diaminodiphenyl ether and with m-phenylene diamine; and by reacting tetracyano-1,4-dithiin with 4,4<SP>1</SP>- diaminodiphenyl ether; some of the polymers are further reacted with 4,4<SP>1</SP>-diaminodiphenyl ether, m-phenylene diamine, pyromellitonitrile dianhydride and benzophenone tetracarboxylic dianhydride.
