Abstract

1,173,865. Cathode-ray tubes. TOKYO SHIBAURA ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 7 May, 1968 [9 May, 1967], No. 21588/68. Heading H1D An electron gun comprising a cylindrical cathode 12 and an adjacent control electrode having an aperture 22 for the passage of the beam and a generally annular protuberance 23 surrounding the emissive surface of the cathode, is characterized in that the protuberance 23 is interrupted at one or more points to allow optical observation of the cathode-control electrode spacing during assembly of the gun. The gun shown is one of a triple gun assembly for a colour tube and includes support members 17 adapted to engage glass support rods (not shown). A gap 27 between members 17 allows a beam of light to pass through the cathode-grid assembly between the gaps in the protuberance 23 to an optical projection system which produces a greatly enlarged image on a display screen (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown) thereby allowing accurate measurement of the spacing. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), the protuberance 23 is interrupted at only one point.
