Abstract

1,173,697. Continuous muffle furnaces. T. S. ALLDEN (Indiana General Corp.) 22 Dec., 967, No. 58515/67. Heading F4B. [Also in Division H1]. Apparatus for producing miniature fired ferrite bodies comprises a moulding device feeding a shoot leading to a conveyer 30 passing into and through a continuous, miniature muffle furnace 40, means for supplying inert gas at the exit end thereof, means for supplying air towards the entry end; means for extracting atmosphere gas from about the middle of said muffle and means for conveying ferrites from the conveyer to a testing device. Ferrite core bodies ejected from the moulding device are propelled by air from a jet 11 into the feed shoot (Fig. 8) which deposits them as a single layer on the conveyer 30. The muffle 45 is supplied with air through a tube 64 having an exit port 67 and with inert gas, e.g. N 2 , Ar, CO 2 or water vapour, through a chamber 59 at the exit end, and a vacuum tube with a port 69 in the middle region exhausts the gaseous atmospheres. A mass of brickwork surrounding the alumina muffle is formed with a hollow channel 49 to accommodate the resistance heating coil 50 surrounding the muffle. The conveyer 30 is a flexible mesh belt made of Pt-10% Rh alloy, its wheels 31, 32 being driven by a motor 33 through speed reducers 34, 37, a coupling 35 and shaft 36. After bearing the belt the treated ferrites pass down a shoot (90, Fig. 6) to a testing device similar to that disclosed in U.S. Specification 3,060,376. The ferrites, which have an outside diameter of 0À020-0À050 inch and an inside diameter of 0À013-0À030 inch, are heated to about 1500‹ C. the introduced air burning out the binder and the inert gas preventing reoxidation.
