Abstract

1,173,478. Refrigerating. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 17 Oct., 1967 [17 Oct., 1966], No. 47146/67. Heading F4H. A elongated food storage chamber is cooled by spraying a gas/liquefied gas mixture into the chamber through perforations in a pipe which extends the length of the chamber. The gas content of the mixture is between 8% and 50% by weight, the perforations are more closely spaced at the ends than at the middle of the pipe and the pipe contains means for promoting turbulence in the mixture. As illustrated, a mobile food storage container 11 has a liquid nitrogen container 14 which is filled through a valve 16. A relief valve 22 is provided and is automatically operated to maintain the pressure in the container below a maximum desired value both during filling and during subsequent operation. When a temperature senser 35 in the chamber demands cooling, a valve 39 is automatically operated by a control unit 37 and liquid nitrogen is forced into a pipe 26 by the vapour pressure in the container 14. The valve 39 may be by-passed by a manual valve 40. The pipe 26 acts as a part exchanger to vapourize nitrogen to give the desired gas/ liquid mixture. The mixture passes to the spray pipe 28 and passes through perforations 29 into the chamber. A switch 44 is provided for automatic or manual shutdown of the cooling system when chamber doors 13 are opened. The pipe 28 includes a twisted metal strip, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown), to promote turbulence in the mixture. The perforations are directed downwardly at up to 30 degrees to the horizontal. In other embodiments, Figs. 6, 7 and 8 (not shown), the required vapourization of liquid nitrogen may be accomplished using an expansion valve, the container may be provided with access doors in its side walls, the spray pipe may be thermally insulated, and the heat exchange pipe may be joined to the centre of the spray pipe. The Specification discloses preferred operating conditions, preferred constructional materials, and lists alternative cooling gases.
