Abstract

[Also in Division F2] A tapping device comprises one or more tapping spindles 11, each of which is telescoped into a drive shaft 17, rotated by a pinion 19 driven by a reversible electric motor. The spindles are mounted in a body 25, which is moved towards and away from the work to be tapped by a lead screw driven by a second reversible electric motor. A number of microswitches 56-59, Fig. 7, are provided, which are successively actuated by dogs 61 mounted on a push-rod 62, so as to control the motors, the push-rod being connected to a second lead screw by a rocker arm 65 for moving the rod 62 axially. Shaft 17 is externally screw-threaded at 20 and engages a nut 21 having a thread pitch equal to that of the tap and is connected to body 25 by shear pins. The inner end of spindle 11 has a hard metal pad 26 with a ball 27 disposed therein, the ball co-operating with a spring-urged metal peg 28 located in shaft 17. Spindle 11 has longitudinal grooves 40 which support rollers 41 surrounded by a spring 43, and the rollers project into internal slots (42) in shaft 17. One end of the rollers is loosely encircled by a sleeve 44 screwed to shaft 17, and the other end is engaged by a sleeve 4, which abuts an internally screw-threaded split ring 47, screwed to shaft 17, and held together by a rupturable wire 49, to provide an overload release. In operation, when a predetermined torque is reached, rollers 41 move out of slot 40 and into adjacent grooves to provide slip. This slip continues until the cause is removed or the reversing motor is actuated. When the hole is tapped the motor reverses the drive and shaft 17 moves to the right, Fig. 1. However should the tap stick, the end of split ring 17 engages the end of slots 40, wire 49 snaps, and shaft 17 moves relative to spindle 11. Should the axial load be too great, shearing of the pins of nut 21 will occur.
