Abstract

1,173,138. Carpets; floor mats. THRUPP & MABERLY Ltd. 23 June, 1967 [27 June, 1966], No. 28777/66. Heading A4S. [Also in Division B5] A carpet having a pile 10 set in a woven layer 11 is provided with a strip 14 of thermoplastic material extending along an edge portion adjacent a cut edge and on the face of the carpet formed by the pile 10, the strip 14 being welded to the pile 10. The pile 10 is preferably of wool or an artificial fibre and the layer 11 is hessian and is backed by a layer 12 of rubber or latex. The strip 14 is extruded from polyvinyl chloride and has a portion 15 which extends downwardly at right angles to the plane of the strip to form an edge for the carpet. The upper surface of the strip 14 may be formed with longitudinal ribs 16, 17. Welding is preferably effected using a high frequency current. The central portion of the carpet is provided with a sheet (18), Fig. 1 (not shown). The sheet (18) and the strip 14 may be welded to the pile 10 in the same operation using apparatus similar to that described in Specification 961,861.
