Wickerwork. - Reed wickerwork and like articles that are of the stake-and-strand type and have shapes that are difficult to produce by direct weaving, are made by weaving the reeds &c. into simple forms and then re-shaping the woven material into the desired forms. The material may be moistened before being re-shaped, and the finished articles may be coated with glue, shellac, &c. In order to produce a tapered article of the shape shown in plan in Fig. 28, the material is woven in the form of a circular tube shown in side elevation in Fig. 10, and is then shaped or bent to the required form, the ends 17 of the reed or wire stakes 15 being bent over and inserted into the fabric before or after the shaping operation. In order to preserve the correct shape of the article until it has set permanently to the required form, restraining-devices such as wires &c. 105, Fig. 28, may be temporarily applied; or the article may be held for a time between a former, Fig. 32, and a covering-frame, Fig. 33. The tube, Fig. 10, may be woven by hand upon a former comprising guides 8, Fig. 3, arranged between lower and upper rings 6, 7, the ring 6 being formed with holes to receive the stakes. The former is mounted on a vertical shaft 10 capable of turning in a support 9. In order to cover with wickerwork a baby-carriage bodyframe such as that shown in Fig. 1, a woven tube similar to that shown in Fig. 10 is drawn over the body-frame as indicated in Fig. 12, and the fabric is then drawn into its correct shape and secured in place by tacks &c. driven into the parts 2, 3, Figs. 1 and 12. The projecting ends 17, Fig. 12, are afterwards bent over and inserted into the wickerwork. If the baby-carriage body is open at one end, as shown in Fig. 27, the fabric is woven tubular and is cut vertically before applying it to the frame, the cut portions 58 being folded over and secured to the parts 52<a>, 53<a> of the frame. The material employed for making the fabric may consist of artificial reed made from paper &c.
