Abstract

1,172,997. Monomeric compounds from polyamides. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 May, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 33065/66. Heading C2C. A process for converting polyamides into monomeric compounds containing nitrogen comprises heating the polyamide with ammonia in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation catalyst, the quantity of ammonia employed being at least n moles per mole of polyamide where n is the average number of amide groups in each molecule of polyamide. Examples describe the production of hexamethyleneimine and hexamethylene-1,6-diamine from polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon 66 polymer) and hexamethyleneimine, hexamethylene-1,6- diamine and N-(6-aminohexyl)-hexamethyleneimine from polycaprolactam (nylon 6 polymer).
