117,255. AndrÚ, P. June, 30, 1917, [Convention datc]. Lawn-mowers.-A motor-driven mowing-machine is provided with rearwardly-extending handle shafts 27, by which it is guided. The motor 1 has its casing integral with a changespeed gear box 2, the motor shaft extending through the gear box and driving the cutter mechanism directly through a clutch 29 operated by a lever 30. The shaft also drives through a clutch 3 operated by links and a cable 19 attached to a turnable handle 20, a sleeve 4, by which motion is transmitted through the change-speed gear and bevel-gearing to a differential gear 10, the shafts of which carry pinions 12 engaging toothed rings 13 on the main driving wheels 15. The pinions 12 are formed on brake drums, each of which is provided with a brake controlled by a cable 18 connected to thumb-levers 18' on the handles. By the operation of these brakes, the machine may be caused to turn sharply. The cutters are carried by two cutter-bars reciprocated in opposite directions by levers oscillated by cranks 33 or by inclined disks on a shaft driven by bevel-gear from the shaft 28. The reciprocating cutters which cut against stationary members may be directly operated by the levers so as to have a slightly curved motion, or may be arranged to have a rectilineal movement. A special cutter is provided for bridging the gas between the two main sets of knives. The pressure of the shoe on the ground is controlled by the adjustment of the wheels 42 supporting the forward end of the machine through a blade spring. A divider for the crop is fitted at the front of the machine. The cutters may be removed and the machine utilized for other implements. In a modification, the stationary blades are dispensed with and the machine is provided with two sets of reciprocating blades which cut by engagement with each other. In this case, a pneumatic shock-absorber may be fitted in the driving gear for the cutters.
