Abstract
1,172,173. Zinc electrodes. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 15 Jan., 1968 [30 Jan., 1967], No. 2107/68. Heading H1B. [Also in Division D1] An anode comprises a pressure formed aggregate of randomly oriented zinc fibres and/or zinc grids having a bulk density between 1 and 2À5 gm./c.c. The electrode may comprise a zinc fibre mat supported on expanded zinc sheet (Fig. 6, not shown) or enveloped in expanded zinc sheet (Fig. 5 or 7, not shown) or a compressed stack of expanded zinc sheets in random orientation (Fig. 9, not shown). In a particular zinc-air cell, Fig. 2, zinc fibres 22 are partially enclosed in expanded zinc sheet 24 which is spot-welded on to expanded zinc backing-plate 32 to complete the anode. The air depolarized cathode comprises carbon plate 16 impregnated with spinel catalyst and in contact with nickel current collector 18. Between the electrodes separator 26 is of non-woven nylon fibres soaked in aqueous NaOH or KOH. Each cell is encased in polypropylene or epoxy resin frame 14 and several cells are supported in a case of epoxy-vinyl resin (Fig. 1, not shown) in such a way that air may circulate between them. The anodes of the invention may also be used with cathodes of MnO 2 , AgO, NiO or HgO in alkaline cells.
