Abstract
1,172,052. Apparatus for forming recesses in thermoplastic films. O. HÍFLIGER, and R. KARG., [trading as HÍFLIGER & KARG]. 25 Jan., 1968 [25 Jan., 1967], No. 3927/68. Heading B5B. The peripheral surface of a rotatable metal drum 1 (Fig. 1) is provided with recesses 2 (Figs. 1 and 2) communicating via openings 6 with passageways 5. As the drum rotates the passageways 5 are periodically brought into communication with a slot 7 in a stationary ring 8 on which one end face of the drum slides and which communicates via a pipe 9 with a source of vacuum. In the same way the open ends of the passageways 5 periodically pass a slot 10 in the ring 8 which slot communicates via a pipe 11 with a source of pressurized air. The periphery of the drum is provided near its edges with a row of recesses 12 communicating via bores 13 with the passageways 5. The internal surface of the peripheral wall of the drum is provided with cooling fins 14. In operation the film 16 after being passed on to the peripheral surface of the drum passes through a zone 17 in which the film is heated to render it deformable. The film then passes over a portion of the peripheral surface of the drum in which the recesses 2 are in communication with the source of vacuum via the slot 7 whereby the portions of the film covering the recesses 2 are drawn into the recesses. At the same time the portions of the film covering the recesses 12 which are also in communication with the vacuum slot 7 is brought into air-tight engagement with the periphery of the drum and areas of the film covering the recesses 2 are drawn into the recesses and recesses are formed in the film Further rotation of the drum causes the deformed embossed portion of the film to leave the zone of the slot 7 and the embossed film is thereafter withdrawn from the drum. Thereafter the hot portion of the drum periphery moves through the zone of the slot 10 where the passageways 5 and recesses 2 are cooled by compressed air from the slot 10.
