A dental syringe handpiece comprises a nozzle 6 connected by a shank 1 to a connection 3 for a fluid supply conduit 4, a head end of the shank having a first face 5 from which the nozzle projects, and a second inclined face 7 in which is an element 8 or 9 for operating a fluid supply valve, the element being mounted so as to extend for operation through an aperture in the inclined face but so that it does not project outside a zone defined by extending the surface of the main body of the shank. As illustrated, the syringe comprises a syringe shank I having a rectangular cross-section and tapering in wedge-shaped manner from a head portion 2 to a foot end provided with a connection 3 for a hose 4 through which are fed compressed air and water under pressure. The head portion is V-shaped and has a face 5 on which is mounted a discharge nozzle 6 and a face 7 on which are arranged single-arm lever operating elements 8 (shown halfdepressed) and 9 (shown undepressed or inoperative) for the operation of valves (not shown) located in the syringe shank to control the supply of air and water. The operating elements are pivotable about a common shaft 11 which is parallel to the edge 10 forming the boundary between the sloping end faces of the head portion. The angle α between the head portion face which carries the valve operating elements and the adjacent face 12 of the body of the syringe shank preferably is between 190‹ and 255‹ and desirably is 217‹, and the angle # of taper of the syringe shank preferably is between 2‹ and 8‹ and desirably is 5‹. In the inoperative or undepressed position the upper side of each operating lever preferably makes an angle of between 180‹ and α with the adjacent face of the syringe shank; in the operative or depressed position, the upper side of each operating lever preferably is in the plane of the head portion face which carries the operating levers. Discharge of air or of water is obtained by depression of the relevant operating lever; a spray discharge is obtained by depression of both operating levers simultaneously.
