Abstract

1,171,931. Tubular filaments. VICKERS Ltd. 16 Aug., 1967 [8 Sept., 1966], No. 40265/66. Heading B5B. A method of manufacturing a tube, comprises coating a drawable filament with a solidifiable material, causing or allowing the material to solidify to form a tubular coating on the filament and thereafter removing the filament from the coating by drawing the filament so as to produce the required tube. The solidifiable material may be, for example, a solution of polyvinyl chloride, or a polymerizable material capable of being solidified by polymerization, and possibly containing a polymerization catalyst, e.g. a silicone fluid. The drawable filament is suitably a nylon filament, especially an undrawn nylon monofilament. A liquid lubricant, suitably water or a surface-active agent, may be introduced between the tubular coating and the filament to assist the withdrawal of the filament. In a preferred method, the drawable filament is coated with the solidifiable coating material by pulling the filament through the solidifiable material, in a dust-free environment if tubes free from pinholes are desired. A number of methods of gripping the tube during removal of the filament may be used, including (a) gripping the tube between two layers of adhesive tape fastened to a rigid base, e.g. double-sided linen tape under the tube which is then covered by, e.g. "Sellotape" (Registered Trade Mark), (b) embedding the tube in a low melting point adhesive, for example Scotch glue, or, for large sizes of tubing, in a low melting-point wax; (c) embedding the tube in a soluble adhesive which can readily be redissolved without causing damage to the tube, e.g. polystyrene cement; (d) gripping the tube between two or more non-adhesive members, which are either rigid and roughsurfaced, or elastic surfaced, e.g. rough surfaced metal plates or plates coated with rubber; and (e) gripping the tube only at the point where the filament is being drawn, whereby the elastic forces of the tube overcome the friction between the drawn filament and the tube. Such gripping may be carried out manually or mechanically by pulling the filament at constant speed, the tube being gripped between rollers geared to the puller so that the part of the filament being drawn is always between the rollers. The viscosity of the unpolymerized silicone fluid can be adjusted by dilution, e.g. with toluene, or by filling, e.g. with "Aerosil", a finely divided commercially available silica. Polyvinyl chloride tubes can be made by using a solution of plasticized polyvinyl chloride in tetrafluoroethane of suitable viscosity in the aforementioned method. The solution is preferably used in a covered vessel to prevent excessive solvent evaporation. An example illustrates the production of tubes having a bore of 0À002 inch radius by pulling undrawn nylon filaments at 2 inches per minute through either solutions of polyvinyl chloride, or through silicone fluids.
