Abstract
1,171,733. Carbodiimides. INDUSTRIA CHIMICA PROFARMACO S.p.A. 23 April, 1968, No. 19020/68. Heading C2C. Carbodiimides of the general formula R-N=C=N-R<SP>1</SP> in which R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, represent C 1 -C 6 alkyl radicals, cycloalkyl radicals containing up to 7 carbon atoms, alkaryl radicals containing not more than 8 carbon atoms or monocyclic aryl radicals, are prepared by treating a disubstituted thiourea of general formula R-NH-SO-NH-R<SP>1</SP> with an inorganic reagent having the link S-Cl, in a suitable solvent, neutralizing the resulting mixture with an alkaline aqueous solution, separating the organic phase, and isolating the crude carbodiimide by evaporating the solvent therefrom. Suitable reagents with the link S-Cl are, for example, thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, chlorosulphonic acid, sulphur dichloride and sulphur monochloride. Examples are given of the preparation of di-n-butylcarbodiimide, dicyclohexyl-carbodiimide, and N-phenyl-N<SP>1</SP>-cyclohexyl-carbodiimide.
