Abstract

1,171,442. Polypropylene filaments. ASAHI KASEI KOGYO K.K. 30 Aug., 1967 [6 Sept., 1966; 28 Feb., 1967], No. 8162/69. Divided out of 1,171,232. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C3] Polypropylene fibres are obtained by meltspinning a composition comprising crystalline polypropylene having a degree of depolymerization of 2À0 or less, and 3-15% by weight liquid paraffin, based on the weight of the composition. Liquid paraffin is defined as a petroleum fraction boiling in the range 330-390‹ C. and which is a colourless oily liquid at normal temperature, produced by highly refining a lubricating oil. A heat stabilizer for the polypropylene, e.g. 2,6- di - tertiary - butyl - para - cresol may also be present, a pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide or an organic dyestuff (e.g. CI pigment red, CI pigment yellow, CI pigment blue, CI pigment green), other inorganic pigments, e.g. CI 77600, together with dispersing agents therefore, and fluorescent brighteners. Preferably, the weight of pigment is 3% or less based on weight of the composition. In examples, melt-spinning is effected at a temperature in the range 190‹ to 285‹ C. and at a spinning speed of 800-1100 metres per minute, and the resulting unstretched fibres may be heat-treated, stretched and then relaxed. Suitably, the unstretched fibres are heat-treated at a temperature in the range 15‹ to 140‹ C. for at least 5 hours, and relaxation is effected within ten hours after stretching. Examples are given.
