Ltd. 22 July, 1968 [2 Aug., 1967; 10 Aug., 1967; 28 Dec., 1967 (2); 4 Oct., 1967; 14 Oct., 1967; 28 Dec., 1967; 12 Jan., 1968; 30 Jan., 1968], No. 34954/68. Heading G5R. A blank copying tape 17 and a master record tape 16 of higher coercivity are wound together on to a take-up reel 24 with their magnetic coatings in contact with each other and are then subjected to a diminishing alternating magnetic field of strength intermediate between the coercive forces of the two tapes. This transfer field may be produced by passing alternating current through electromagnet windings or by rotating the tape reel past a plurality of permanent magnets of alternate polarities. To reduce print-through, a spacer tape, possibly carrying a magnetic shielding layer, may be wound with the master and copy tapes, or the master tape may carry a shielding layer on the side opposite to the recording layer. The copying and rewinding process may be controlled automatically by means of electrical or optical indicators near the ends of the master tape.
