Abstract

1,171,193. Laryngoscopes. W. N. VELLACOTT and A. J. SEAR. 6 June, 1968 [13 June, 1967], No. 27204/67. Heading A5R. A laryngoscope comprises integral moulded blade and handle portions 1, 2, adapted to receive a light bulb 5 and battery 6 respectively, there being a fixed electrical lead for interconnecting a side terminal of the bulb with one terminal of the battery and a mobile electrical lead for insertion into a passage through the blade, the passage terminating at a socket for the light bulb, and there being manually operable means 26 for completing the electrical circuit with the two ends of the mobile lead respectively urged into contact with the central end terminal of the bulb and the other terminal of the battery. As shown, the curved blade portion 1 and hollow handle portion 2 are of a synthetic plastics material, the blade having a lateral slot 4 in which is fitted the brass socket 17 for the light bulb 5 and the cylindrical handle portion having a recess 7 to house the dry batteries 6 and closed by a removable cover 19. The fixed electrical connection is embedded in the plastics material of the blade and handle portions and comprises the light bulb socket 17 which is formed in the end of a brass tube 8, a brass sleeve member 12, and (Figure 3, not shown) a wire (10) soldered so as to connect the brass tube and the sleeve member. The mobile electrical lead comprises (Figure 5, not shown), a stainless steel spring wire (29) in an insulating plastics sheath (30) and passing through the brass tube 8, the wire (29) having a first end contact (31) to connect with the end terminal of the bulb and a second loop-shaped end contact (32) to connect with an end terminal of the battery. An end cap 26 having a threaded brass stem 27 is screwed into the bottom of the handle portion and completes the electrical circuit by urging the battery upwards against mobile electrical lead. The blade portion is said to be formed with a rib 3 and with a recess 18 which extends forwardly of the slot so as to allow the transmission of light from the bulb 5 along the blade.
