Abstract

1,171,117. Acoustic measurement of temperature. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 16 Feb., 1967 [24 Dec., 1965], No. 54854/65. Heading H4D. The temperature of fluid flowing through a passage 11 is determined by causing the fluid to actuate a whistle 18 and using the output of a microphone 20 to control a servo device 22, 23 which moves a piston 19 to vary the effective length of the whistle, the piston position being indicative of the fluid temperature. The piston is moved by the servo device such that the sound frequency generated by the whistle is held equal to a predetermined value as determined by comparator 21. Means (not shown) responsive to the piston position supply a signal for operating a control device, e.g. the fuel supply control of a gas-turbine. Microphone 20 may be at the end of a passage leading from enclosure 10, to reduce interference from sound sources other than the whistle.
