Abstract
1,171,012. Coated products. DE SOTO Inc. 10 Feb., 1967, No. 6437/67. Heading B2K. [Also in Division C3] Substrates, e.g. of sheet for automotive finishes, are coated with a thermosetting composition comprising an organic solvent in which is dissolved: (I) A non-gelled condensate of a copolymer of from 3-30% (of the weight of the copolymer) of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer carrying a hydroxyl group, the remainder being at least one monomer containing the CH 2 =C< group, with a Si-containing material having an average of at least 1.2 Si-bonded OH or alkoxy radicals per molecule. The equivalent ratio of Si-OH or Sialkoxy radicals to hydroxy groups in the copolymer ranges from 1:4 to 4:1. Condensation is continued to eliminate 5-95 % of the water or alcohol of reaction and to cause the bulk of the material to become chemically combined with the copolymer. The condensate obtained contains unreacted essentially neutral hydroxyl groups in the copolymer and unreacted acidic Si-OH or Si-alkoxy groups carried by the residue of the Si-containing material in the condensate. (II) an aminoplast resin providing basic methylol groups. The total resin in the composition may comprises 40- 95% by weight of I and 60-5% by weight of II. Suitable OH- containing monomers useful in preparing the copolymer of I are hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylates, (meth)allyl ethers of polyhydric alcohols, (meth)allyl alcohol, 2-hydroxymethyl-5-nor bornene or an unsaturated fatty alcohol derived from a drying oil fatty acid. The siloxane may have the average general formula: in which R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical, R' is a hydroxyl or alkoxy radical, n has an average value of 1 to 2, m has an average value of at least 0.1 and m+n is not greater than 3, there being at least 1.2 (preferably 2 to 8) R' radicals per siloxane molecule. Examples of suitable aminoplasts are triazine 1 formaldehyde resins. The solvent (e.g. xylene and butanol) may comprises 30-65% by weight of the composition. Conventional pigments, e.g. TiO 2 may also be present. The coatings may be hardened by stoving e.g. for 15 minutes at 350‹F.
