Abstract
117,096. Down, T. M. April 30, 1917. Speed indicators operating by sighting terrestrial objects.-Relates to a sighting-device for use on aircraft for determining speed relative to the ground, the distance of terrestrial objectives, and the instants for releasing bombs, and comprises a casing J, Fig. 1, at the upper end of which is pivotally mounted a sighting tube or telescope L<2> which can be swung in the plane of the longitudinal axis of the machine by rack-and-pinion mechanism. Above the open bottom of the casing, is mounted a transparent disk A capable of being rotated by a friction disk P and operating button P<2>. The disk is divided into sectors C, Fig. 4, each sector being marked at the circumference to indicate the height at which it is to be used, and provided with a central line D for the course line. Radial lines E on each side of the lines D serve to indicate drift. Each line D is divided by lines F, to form a scale representing terrestrial distances. By observing the time taken by a terrestrial object to cross two or more lines F, the speed of the aircraft can be calculated.
