Abstract

117,051. Waygood-Otis, Ltd., (Otis Elevator Cc.). March 6,1918. Moving stairways, platforms and the like; stopping on breakage of chains.-Chain-driven conveyers, moving stairways, &c., are provided with an automatic electrical stop gear which stops the apparatus when the driving chain breaks. Underneath and parallel to the working run of the driving chain 1 are mounted two electro-conductive strips 7 mounted on suitably supported insulating strips 8. The conductive strips are in circuit with the electro-motor driving mechanism for the driving sprocket 6 and, when a link of the driving chain breaks, the broken halves drop downwards so that the cross pins 3 come in contact with the conductive strips and energize an electro-magnet which breaks the circuit of a cutout switch, so stopping the current supply to the motor and at the same time applying a brake. In a modification, a single conductor strip is employed, the circuit being completed through the driving chain.
