Abstract
1,170,420. Aerials. ELTRO G.m.b.H. & CO., GES. FUR STRAHLUNGSTECHNIK. 30 Dec., 1966, No. 58453/66. Heading H4A. An electromagnetic wave absorber comprises a plurality of wall elements arranged parallel to the direction of propagation of the wave, and consisting of resin impregnated glass fibre material. The external surfaces of the elements have conductive coatings, the surface resistance of which decreases in the said direction of propagation. The wall elements are disposed adjacent to each other at spacings of less than one-fifth of the longest wavelength to be absorbed. All spaces within or between the elements are filled with a foamed material, such as polyurethane. The wall elements may be flat or tubular (e.g. of circular or hexagonal cross-sections) and the glass fibres may be made up as fabric or matting before application, or they may be wound directly on formers to produce tubes. An absorber may have a dielectric outer covering of thickness less than one-eighth of the minimum wavelength to be absorbed, and including a plurality cf layers of different dielectric constants, to match the impedance of the absorber to that of free space. The conductive coatings of the wall elements may comprise graphite, or carbon black, or a ferrite, or a semi-conductor.
