Abstract

1,170,294. Freezing earth. HALLIBURTON CO. 27 Jan., 1967, No. 4272/67. Heading E1F. [Also in Division F4] An underground L.N.G. storage chamber comprises a borehole 14 extending below the water table of the surrounding earth and closed by a sub-surface concrete cap 20 below which is an annular vapour-condensing tray 15 from which L.N.G. is withdrawn through a line 38, cooled in an exchanger 37 and returned to the tray by a pump 36 through an annular duct 24; the cap 20 also having extending therethrough a conduit 25 leading to the bottom of the hole 14 and a vapour release conduit 40. The chamber wall is supported during drilling by feeding drilling liquid 26 through conduit 25, a buffer layer 22 of castor oil is then introduced above the drilling liquid which latter is then withdrawn through conduit 25 whilst a liquid refrigerant e.g. propane is supplied from a tank 35 through a syphon tube 39 and duct 24 to the tray 15 so that it overflows against the borehole wall which is thus frozen progressively downwards. Prior to charging with L.N.G. the liquid propane is forced from the hole by high pressure natural gas. A plurality of adjacent bore holes may be provided and the fill and outlet line 50 of each hole may be connected together as are the vapour return lines 51 and pressure maintenance lines 52.
