Abstract
1,169,960. Moulding porous bodies. DOULTON & CO. Ltd. 23 Sept., 1968 [21 Sept., 1967], No. 43072/67. Heading B5A. Porous, fluid-permeable bodies are made by wetting a mass of synthetic polymeric material in particulate form with a solvent comprising a material-dissolving and a material-inert component so that the surfaces of the particles are softened and they stick together at their points of contact and removing the solvent to leave the polymer mass in a coherent porous form.. The polymeric mass may contain a filler and may be wetted by pouring, spraying or dipping. The solvent may be removed by vacuum stripping through a porous wall of the mould, centrifuging (e.g. for making pipes) or flash heating. A stream of drying gas may be passed through the material to complete the removal of solvent. In. the examples, porous bodies are made from polystyrene beads using ethylene dichloride and isopropyl alcohol as active and inactive solvent and from nylon granules using formic acid and water as solvent mixture. The bodies may be used for the filtration of liquids or gases and in fluidization operations.
