1,169,932. Felt nib pens. CIGARETTE COMPONENTS Ltd. 21 Oct., 1966 [22 Oct., 1965; 18 May, 1966], No. 47349/66. Heading A4K. [Also in Divisions A2, B1 and D1] A bonded fibrous rod for use as an ink absorber within felt tipped pens, is formed of crimped filaments bonded together at the points of contact and has an evenly deformable peripheral surface such that on transaxial compression of the rod the surface deforms without the formation of irregularities. The rod is formed by feeding the filaments containing a heat activatable bonding constituent to a heating enclosure where an endless tape forms the material into a rod and conveys the rod through the enclosure in which steam is passed through the tape and the rod to activate the bonding constituent. The rod and tape then passes through a cooling enclosure where air is passed through the tape and rod. The tape is separated from the rod which psses via a device which measures the presure drop transversely through the rod and which varies the feed rate of the material in dependence on the measurement, to a cutting device which cuts the rod into suitable lengths. The tape and rod pass through bores which may be of adjustable cross-section in the heating and cooling enclosures, with a threading slit for the tape, being provided and having a removable sealing member. The edges of the tape do not quite meet in the heating enclosure causing a ridge to form on the rod which is removed by a presser arm between the two enclosures. The tape may be woven from nylon or polyethylene terephthalate monofilament, have a coarse or fine weave to produce an embossed or smooth rod, and may have a coating of silicone resin or polytetrafluroethylene. The filaments are fed to the heating enclosure from a bale via an air banding jet, draw rolls, a further air banding jet, and spray guns which may spray the bonding constituent and/or a particle applicator which may apply the bonding constituent and/or activated carbon, silica gel, activated alumina or molecular sieves. The filaments may be of cellulose acetate with glyceryl triacetate or low-density polyethylene particles as the bonding constituent, or a polyolefin, a polyamide, or a polyester.
