The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein Y is a keto or hydroxymethylene group, Z is an α-R-#-hydroxymethylene, α-R<SP>1</SP>-#- hydroxymethylene or #-R<SP>11</SP>-methylene group in which R is hydrogen, acetyl or hydroxyacetyl, R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, C 1-4 alkyl, vinyl, ethyny] or haloethynyl and R<SP>11</SP> is acetyl or hydroxyacetyl, Y<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, methyl, fluorine or chlorine, D is hydrogen, hydroxy or keto and Q is hydrogen, methyl or fluorine, 3- and 17-ethers and esters thereof, and their preparation by reduction of a 3-keto-# 4 -19-nor-10α-steroid by lithium in liquid ammonia, followed, if a 17α-unsaturated substituent is desired, by ketalization of the 3-keto group, reduction to a 17-ketone, reaction with sodium acetylide or a sodium haloacetylide, optional hydrogenation of a 17- ethynyl product to a 17-vinyl product, and hydrolysis. The compounds of the invention have antiandrogenic, anti-corticoidal or anti-progestational activity and may be used in pharmaceutical compositions in combination with a carrier.
