Abstract
1,169,754. Travelling grates. J. J. MARTIN. 12 Dec., 1966, No. 55501/66. Heading F4B. A travelling or reciprocating grate for a large furnace comprises three grateways I, II and III kept apart by separating walls consisting of hollow parts 2 and 2a, said walls being slidable one into the other and so urged apart by horizontally arranged compression springs 3 that the grate bars when in the cold state are closely pressed against the separating walls 2, 2a without any expansion spaces 11 remaining. In another embodiment (Fig. 3) the separating wall comprises two hollow members pressed apart by one or more lever arms pivotally joined to the free end of a pull rod, the other end of which is coupled through a spring to a fixed part of the grate. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) the separating wall comprises two hollow members having upper and lower inclined wall portions against which are respectively urged upper and lower curved bridging shells by one or more compression springs, said springs being carried on a pin which passes through the lower bridging shell and is secured to a fixed part of the grate.
