Abstract

1,169,510. Selective printing; magnetic printing. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 21 June, 1968, No. 29772/68. Headings B6C and B6F. Electromagnetic printing.-An electromagnetic printer comprises a recording head 3 selectively magnetizing a drum 10 or belt (13), Fig. 2, not shown, a powder applicator 2, and a transporting magnetic field which transfers the ink from the drum 10 to a record 7 and the ink is bonded to the record at 5 whilst under the influence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field is supplied by transfer roller 4 (or by the belt 13) which is permanently magnetized in a manner such that the emergent magnetic flux at the surface 10 is radial from the centre of the roller. The roller has a knurled surface and is positioned so that the record sheet 8 passes in close proximity to, but does not touch, the drum 6. If they touch the pressure must be less than that necessary to cause a pressure transfer. Inking arrangements.-The magnetic particles (e.g. of ferromagnetic powder) are coated in a thermal fixing agent (e.g. resin or wax) coloured to provide a contrast to the record sheet 6. Visible display.-The matter printed may be viewed upright through a mirror 9 if the initial recording at 3 is inverted. Illuminating devices.-The drum may be illuminated. Series printing.-If a series of copies of a particular magnetic recording are required without continually re-applying the input signal, the magnetic field of roller 4 or tape (13) is less than the magnetic field to create the record.
