Abstract

1,108,102. Printing plates; magnetic images. AGFA A.G. 2 April, 1965 [4 April, 1964], No. 14069/65. Heading B6C. [Also in Division H1] A magnetic printing form comprises a layer of particles or wires of a hard magnetic substance coated with, or supported in a matrix of, a soft magnetic substance of temperaturedependent permeability, which layer has been subjected to a uniform magnetizing or demagnetizing field and simultaneously to a thermal image of the original. For colour printing groups of different coated particles are used, each group being associated with a particular colour. In Figs. 5 and 6, hard particles 9-12 (having magnetization curves k) with soft coatings 13-16 (having permeability curves m) are associated with Y, R, B and Bk resp.; thus at 70-80‹ C., only Y particles are magnetizable. The image is developed by offering differently coloured inks to the layer consecutively, either at different distances (Fig. 7) or at different temperatures (Fig. 8), or by using inks of different permeability. Colours may be applied in the reverse order from that shown, for transfer printing. For tone printing groups of the same or different hard particles may have the same or different soft coatings or matrix, so that using a single colour ink, the darkest areas are produced when most particles are magnetized. In this case, the permeability of the soft material may vary linearly with temperature (line l in Fig. 6), to produce a gradual temperature effect. Information printing: each group of particles may correspond to an information group, so that information can be printed selectively.
