Abstract

1,169,241. Separating carbon dioxide from methanol synthesis gas. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. 20 Jan., 1967 [22 Jan., 1966], No. 3099/67. Heading B1L. [Also in Division C2] In the synthesis of methanol wherein synthesis gas is obtained from light hydrocarbons such as light petroleum or natural gas, by cracking with oxygen or steam, carbon dioxide is partially removed from the synthesis gas stream. Thus, hot synthesis gas from cracker I is led to cooler 12 and then to separator 14 for removal of condensables, before being compressed to synthesis pressure in compressor 16 and thereafter divided into two branch streams by three way valve 18. One branch stream 19 is passed to washing tower 3 in which the gas is washed at ambient temperature with crude methanol taken from pressure separator 5, optionally by way of a decompression tank (113; see Fig. 2; not shown), by means of re-pressurising pump 21, and the washed gas is recombined at a suitable junction 23 with second branch stream before being passed, optionally in association with recycled gas, to synthesis reactor 4. The carbon dioxide-containing methanol which collects in the bottom of washing column 3 is passed through expansion valve 35 to decompression tank 6 before being transferred to distillation column 7 for recovery of the products.
