Abstract
1,169,181. Phosphonate esters containing hydroxy groups. STAUFFER CHEMICAL CO. 31 Aug., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 38882/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] The invention comprises phosphonates of the general formula in which R and R<SP>1</SP>, which may be the same or different, are ethylene groups or ethylene groups substituted with alkyl or haloalkyl substituents, at least one of R and R<SP>1</SP> being an ethylene group substituted with a haloalkyl substituent, R 2 and R 3 are C 2 -C 10 alkylene groups and m and m<SP>1</SP> are integers from 1 to 10. They may be obtained by reacting a phosphite of the formula with formaldehyde and a dialkanol amine of the formula HN(R<SP>2</SP>OH)(R<SP>3</SP>OH), the reaction being generally effected at 0 to 100 C., preferably 25 to 70 C. The products are useful for the production of flame-resistant polyurethanes by reaction with organic polyisocyanates.
