Abstract

1,168,862. Working plastic materials. BORG-WARNER CORP. 18 Jan., 1967, No. 2738/67. Heading B1C. [Also in Division B5] . Plastics material is plasticized in a substantially annular elongated axial zone 72 whose diameter increases from one end to the other, the zone being formed between a head 57 and a seat 71, one of which is rotated relative to the other. In one embodiment plastics material is admitted to a chamber 38 through a feed opening . 43 and fed through the plasticizing zone 72 by a ram 41. The head 57 and seat may be conical in shape, the head 57 being rotated. The zone 72 is varied in volume by adjusting the position of a member 56 by means of a screw 116 and a locking nut 117. The material is pushed from the zone 72 through annular transfer chamber 63 and groove 61 to an opening 74 whence it passes to an injection cylinder 91 containing a ram 92 and is fed via a valve controlled outlet 93. Modifications. In Fig. 4 (not shown) a supplementary screw (131) integral with a head (57a) assists or resists movement of plastics material therepast, plasticised material being stored in a chamber (132) and ejected therefrom by a ram (134) through an opening 74a and an injection nozzle 96a. In a further modification (Fig. 5, not shown) the head 57b is rotated from its apex end by a shaft 56b of reduced diameter. Injection is effected by a ram 134b which is solid instead of sleeve shaped, and the feed ram 41b is at right angles to the axis of the head 57b. The head member and seat may be other than cone shaped, e.g. parabolic.
