In an arrangement for scattered radiation and fluorescence spectroscopy a parallel beam of radiation 3-5 impinges on a concave mirror 1 and is reflected as a convergent beam on to a convex mirror 2 having a common focus F with mirror 1 and common optical axis X-X parallel to beam 3-5, so that the convergent reflected beam from mirror 1 is reflected back to mirror 1 as a parallel beam of smaller cross-section. The beam thus decreases in cross-section as it approaches axis X-X and the whole beam is absorbed by the sample in the space between the mirrors. The mirrors may be formed as internal or external coatings on a sample cell whose walls are shaped to the form 1, 2. The mirrors may be spherical or curved parabolically in their meridional sections traversed by the optical axis and struck by the principal ray 3.
