[Also in Division G3] Apparatus for controlling the temperature of a rotatable roller having heater means disposed between the shaft and the inner surface of the roller, comprises a temperature detecting device secured to the roller varying the frequency of a signal dependent on roller temperature, and means for transmitting the signal to a control arrangement without mechanical contact between rotating parts. The roller 1 has induction heating coils 7 and a temperature detector 10 such as a thermistor, a ferrite core, quartz resonator, or barium titanate electrostatic capacitor connected into a variable frequency oscillator circuit 13 the output from which is supplied to a rotating output member 21' which is electrostatically coupled to a collector member 22' connected to a frequency discriminator or amplifier 27 controlling the heating current. The oscillator is powered through a transformer 16, 17 having a rotatable secondary winding 16. Detector 10 may be any element which is changed in frequency, resistance, dielectric constant, magnetic permeability, or other property which changes with temperature. As an alternative to the transformer 16, 17 the oscillator power may be derived from a photo-electric cell arrangement supplied with light, or through a capacitive coupling.
