Mixtures of methyl-pentenes containing substantial proportions of 4-methyl-pentene-1 are obtained by contacting propylene at 100- 300‹ C. under superatmospheric pressure (e.g. 100-300 atms.) with a catalyst comprising LiH and/or NaH, optionally supported on a suitable carrier, e.g. an alkali metal carbonate, sulphate, or chloride (e.g. K 2 CO 3 , Na 2 CO 3 or Li 2 CO 3 /Na 2 CO 3 mixture), SrCO 3 , alumina or graphite. The process may be conducted with or without a solvent, suitable solvents being octane, decane, dodecane, diisoamyl ether, dioxane, and mixtures thereof.
