Abstract

1,167,721. Resistors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 17 Nov., 1966 [27 Aug., 1965], No. 37049/65. Heading H1S. Resistor 12 located in porcelain or like housing 11 whose conductive end-plates 13, 14 form the resistor terminals, is totally submerged in silicone fluid 15. The volume of silicone fluid is such that the equilibrium temperature of its entire volume does not rise above its autoignition temperature when it is heated by current flowing through the resistor. The silicone fluid is chosen to have a viscosity such that it will circulate at the lowest ambient temperature encountered. The silicone is preferably a polydimethylsiloxane or polyphenylmethylsiloxane with a viscosity in the range 50 to 5000 centistokes at 25‹ C. Means to allow expansion of the fluid are provided, e.g. as shown, an air space above the surface.
