Abstract

1,167,621. Transporter systems; tracked hovercars. M. BARTHALON. 4 Jan., 1967 [19 Jan., 1966], No. 450/67. Headings B7K and B7L. A transporter system comprises a metal or concrete beam 1 of rectangular or circular or star cross-section from which a car 3 is suspended by creating a subatmospheric air pressure in each chamber 15a, 15b formed between the beam panel 6 and the car body 9, by means of an extractor 10, the chambers 15a, 15b being sealed to the beam by skirts 33, 33a, 33b and seals 34, 35, the car 3 being supported by atmospheric pressure off its wheels (or slides) 41 and spaced from the beam 1. Brake shoes may be applied directly to the beam 1, and the motor 25 may be electric or a heat engine. In another embodiment, the car body 9 is flexibly suspended from separate blocks embracing a circular section beam 1, and drive is by linear induction motor. In a further embodiment, labyrinth air passeges seal the car to the star section track, and the car body 9 is also suspended from the blocks by vacuum chambers; car drive is by wheels on the body 9 engaging the heated beam 1 and driven by electric motor, gas turbine or internal combustion engine. The beam 1 may be tunnel mounted. The shape of the chambers, means for maintaining sealing skirts in contact with the beam, and means for adjusting the vacuum in each chamber in response to differing loads on the car, are described.
