Abstract

1,167,364. Typewriters. G. RITZERFELD. 28 Sept., 1966 [10 Dec., 1965], No. 43355/66. Divided out of 1,167,362. Heading B6F. Apparatus for reproducing simultaneously a machine readable text and visually readable characters on a sheet 13, Fig. 3, comprises a first typewriter 157 producing a visually readable master sheet 5 and a second typewriter 158 producing machine readable original sheet 1, the two typewriters being coupled together electrically and the second typewriter having a larger carriage letter-spacing than the first. The machines are used in a method of processing data by printing on a copy sheet e.g. a record card 13, from the master sheet 5 and also providing machine readable data e.g. punched holes P by means of a punching device 17, which method comprises producing the typed copy and machine readable original 1 which is sensed by reading devices 9 which controls, via a store 18 and a decoder 151, the data punched, attaching the master sheet 1 on to a duplicating machine 12, 15, and printing parts of the master sheet on the same card 13. The typewriters 158, 157 for producing the machine readable original 1 and the master sheet 5 have type-levers 3, Fig. 2, and between them and the platen and between the original 1 and master sheet 5 is a carbon sheet 4. A mirror script is produced on the back of sheet 5 by a dye sheet 6. The characters may be of known CMC 7 script readable by magnetic heads or two machines coupled together may be used, one typing in ordinary characters and the other magnetic data. In a further embodiment (Fig. 4) the magnetic recording head 204 is mounted so it records directly on the rear of the sheet at the same time as typing is effected on the front sheet. As shown in Fig. 6 a typewriter (212) is coupled to a separate electronic coding unit to form the machine readable data on a separate sheet. The second typewriter 158 may be arranged to effect a larger carriage movement than the first machine. The second typewriter may itself comprise a machine which produces both a visually read sheet (217, Fig. 6) and a magnetically readable sheet 216 or as in (Fig. 4) the second typewriter may in addition to the visually readable matter on one side produce magnetically readable matter, on a strip (206), Fig. 5, on the other. Duplicating machine.-The process employs known rotary duplicating machines in which the original sheets 1, 1a are clamped on a cylinder 153 arranged adjacent to and driven in synchronism with the printing cylinder. In each of these embodiments the sensing heads are moved in letter-spacing direction by a helical groove and follower, and stepped for line-spacing by racks and pawls. The sensing devices may be magnetic or optical readers. The printing cylinder 12 may have selectable matter controlled by magnetic sensing of marks on the original sheet 1a.
