A pharmaceutical composition for promoting healing after cryogenic surgery comprises a solution of chymopapain in physiological saline, having a concentration of 25-20,000 micrograms/ml. The solution is administered locally to the cryogenically destroyed area (e.g. sites of tonsils, haemorhoids, cervical cones or the prostate gland) by appropriate means, such as infusion or spraying. In an Example, similar saline solutions of trypsin, papain, and B. subtilis protease are described.
