Abstract

1,166,226. Cutting cheese slices. NATIONAL DAIRY PRODUCTS CORP. 12 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 6785/68. Heading A4C. [Also in Division B8] A web 24, Fig. 2, such as cheese, is cut into strips 20 by rotary cutters 41, and the strips are turned and collated by rollers 44, Figs. 1 and 2, and turned to decollated by rollers 46 into for example two groups of eight strips 20 side by side. Each group is fed by conveyer belts 49a, 49b to transverse cutters comprising for example four blades 95, Fig. 3, on rotating cylindrical members 73, which cut them into sheets 22 in longitudinally staggered relationship. The alternately arranged belts 49b terminate rearwardly of the belts 49a, leaving gaps 71 through which rise pickers 105 comprising two prongs 107, Figs. 6 and 7, slidable on bars 113 and aligned with the gaps 71 by guides 149, the bars being carried on chains 119 and 121 and the pickers being maintained horizontal while receiving and carrying the sheets by a cam groove 139. The chains move at for example four times the speed of the belts, and each picker picks up a sheet as it rises through a gap 71. As the pickers move forwards, they are moved along the rods 113 by cam strips 169, so as to converge four rows of sheets into one row 21, all the pickers and sheets in one group of four being staggered, the sheets being deposited on output conveyers 147 as the pickers move down between pairs of belts of the conveyers 147, which deliver them to wrapping machines 30. The pickers are restored to alignment with the gaps 71 on their lower runs by divergence cam tracks and a selector system.
