[Also in Division F2] An apparatus for inserting a bushing 135 into a cylindrical casting or other machine part 131 with a bore 134 comprises an hydraulic ram 126 which forces the bushing into the bore and means to subject one of the parts to continuous and sustained vibration. The vibration of the bushing 135 is attained by a horizontal steel beam 140 which is set to vibrate in a vertical plane and is supported from a beam 148 at the nodes. At each end of the beam 140 is an air-driven oscillator 158 which comprises a sleeve (160), Fig. 5 (not shown), on which an inertia ring (165) is mounted and made to rotate about the pin in a vertical plane to set up the vibrations (see Division F2). The vibrations are transmitted from the beam to the bushing 135 by an adapter 141 mounted on the beam at a point spaced from the antinode. The casting 131 is clamped between an adjustable pad 180 and an adapter 185 associated with a beam 188 which is made to vibrate by oscillators at each end in a similar manner to the beam 140. An hydraulic ram 210 extends from the side 125 of the press 120 so that force fits can be performed horizontally. With the above apparatus the bushing is made to vibrate longitudinally whereas the casting vibrates in an elliptic mode. The apparatus may be used with only one beam in sonic vibration or the beams may be vibrated simultaneously at the same frequency or different frequency and in phase or out of phase. The vibration frequency is stated as being sonic but is not limited to the human audible range. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,030,448.
