Abstract

1,165,853. Oriented concentric sheath-core filaments. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 31 Jan., 1968 [31 Jan., 1967], No. 5015/68. Heading B5B. Oriented concentric sheath-core filaments suitable for tyre reinforcement comprise a sheath of a synthetic linear aliphatic polyamide having a melting point of at least 180‹ C. and a glass transition temperature (Tg), less than 100‹ C. and a core consisting of a polyamide having recurring aromatic or cycloaliphatic rings as an integral part of the main polymer chain and having a Tg of at least 140‹ C., or a polyester having an initial modulus of at least 60 grams per denier. The filaments comprising at least 30% and preferably about 40-70% by weight of sheath polymer and the remainder core polymer. The melting point of both polymers should not exceed 350‹ C. In an example, molten polyhexamethylene adipamide having a relative viscosity of 45 and molten polyethylene terephthalate having a relative viscosity of 30 are simultaneously extruded at the same volumetric flow rates through each of the extrusion surfaces of a spinneret assembly adapted for the melt-spinning of concentric sheath-core filaments to form 34 sheath-core filaments with the polyamide as the sheath and the polyester as the core. The filaments are air quenched and drawn at a stretch ratio of 5À8 over a snubbing pin at 100‹ C. and a hot pipe having a surface temperature profile of 150/ 170/190‹ C. to give a yarn having a denier of 216. Using conventional procedures except as noted, the yarn is converted into an 1800 denier tyre cord, dipped, dried at constant length, hotstretched 5% at 200‹ C. and built into an 850 x 14 4-ply tyre. The tyre is cured by heating in a press at 130-147‹ C. for 20 minutes. The partially cured tyre is then inflated to 48 p.s.i.g. and placed in an oven at 139-159‹ C. for 45 minutes. A flat-spot is produced in the tyre by inflating to 22 p.s.i.g., heating to 77‹ C. and then loading the tyre to 1086 pounds for 2 hours, i.e. until the tyre has cooled. The radial deformation in mils, is measured as the flatspot depth and in this case was found to be 124. In another example, 50-50 sheath-core filaments are similarly formed, the core in this case being a polymer (PACM-12) of 57 relative viscosity prepared from dodecanedioic acid and bis - (4 - aminocyclohexyl) - methane having a trans-trans isomer content of 70% by weight. The flat spot produced in the tyre following the procedure of the previous example is 133 mils.
