Abstract

1,165,637. Nitro-phenols. COALITE & CHEMICAL PRODUCTS Ltd. 19 July, 1968 [19 July, 1967], No. 33127/67. Heading C2C. A process for the production of nitro-phenols comprises nitrosating a phenol which is unsubstituted in at least one position and, without separating the nitroso compound, oxidizing the nitroso group or groups to a nitro group or groups. Purification of the crude nitrophenol is effected by converting it into an alkali metal salt thereof, separating the alkali metal salt from the mother liquor and acidifying the salt to regenerate the nitrophenol. The preparations of 4 - nitro - m - cresol, 2 - (and 3 - ) - chloro - 4 - nitrophenol, 4 - nitro - 2,3 - (and 2,5 - )xylenol, 4 - nitro - 2,5 - (and 2,6 -, 2,3 -, and 3,5 - )dichlorophenol, 2,4 - dinitro 3,6 - dichlorophenol and 4,6 - dinitro - 2,3 - xylenol are described. The phenylurethane derivative of 4-nitro-2,3- xylenol was prepared.
