Abstract

1,165,596. Sensing records. CREED & CO. Ltd. 25 Oct., 1967, No. 48465/67. Heading G4M. A perforated tape or card 3 is sensed by elements 5 biased towards the record 3 by springs 4 and moved parallel to the feed path simultaneously with a reciprocable feed member 7, and each element 5 operates an associated switch 28 during the feed stroke, the reaction on each element 5 of the force necessary to operate the associated switch 28 passing through the pivot 2 of the element. The armature 9 of a magnet 12 acts on the common pivot shaft 2 of the sensing elements 5 and feed member 7 to move the elements 5 and member 7 in the feed direction, a sprung detent member 13 being temporarily cammed out of the feed path by movement of record 3. An element 5 which has engaged a code perforation is in the position shown, and during the feed stroke its surface 6 engages surface 18 of a slider 19 to close contacts 27, 32, slider 19 being held in the position shown during the return stroke by latch 23. If, during the next feed stroke, the element 5 senses a " space ", it will be pivoted anti-clockwise and its surface 17 will release latch 23 to allow slider 19 to move to the right under the action of spring 24, thereby closing contacts 29, 32. The recordengaging extensions of elements 5 and member 7 have a non-linear sloping rear surface to impart initial downward momentum thereto as they are cammed out of engagement with the record during the return stroke. The feed member may operate a similar switch 28 to indicate presence or absence of tape in the reader.
