Abstract

1,165,522. Curing epoxy resins. BECK KOLLER & CO. (ENGLAND) Ltd. 20 Feb., 1968 [22 Feb., 1967], No. 8132/68. Heading C3B. Epoxy resins are hardened by means of polyamidoamine resins containing imidazoline rings. The latter are prepared by copolymerizing conjugated unsaturated fatty acids or esters thereof and other ethylenically unsaturated aromatic compounds, e.g. styrene, with ethylene diamine or one of its homologues having the formula H(NHCH 2 CH 2 ) x NH 2 , where x is from 1 to 5. Heating the resultant polyamidoamine, optionally in vacuo, leads to cyclization to give the imidazoline ring. The polymers may be those described and claimed in Specification 1,165,521. From 0 to 10% of the mixture of an accelerator may also be used. Suitable compounds are: phenol, 4,4<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxydiphenyl- 2,2 - propane, furfural alcohol, lactic acid, salicylic acid, dimethylbenzoylamine or tris- (dimethylaminomethyl) -phenol.
