Abstract

116,531. Parsons, Sir C. A., Cook, S. S., and Douglas, L. M. June 11, 1017. Toothed gearing.-To prevent the deflexion 'of an intermediate shatt used in double helical reduction gearing by the reactions between the gear teeth, the shaft is so placed with respect to the driving and driven shafts that the reactions between the different sets of gear teeth act in parallel lines. This condition is fulfilled by mahing the angle between the common radial lines of the shafts a, d and d, g equtd to the sum of the angles a<1>, a<2> representing the slope of the gear teeth, that is the angles a , Fig. 2, between the common radius r of two wheels and the common tangent t of the tooth surfaces. Modifications applied to double and to triple reduction gearing are described in which the shafts are so arranged that the forces acting on the intermediate shafts are all vertical. In another modification, two driving pinions h engage the wheel c on the intermediate shaft d, and are so placed that the resultant of the forces between the teeth is in a line parallel to the line of action between the teeth of the wheels e, f.
