1,165,176. Treating plastics surface. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 28 Sept., 1966 [23 Oct., 1965], No. 43232/66. Heading B2K. A method of re-finishing the surface, of an article made from nitrilonile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, which surface has deterioration effects, comprises contacting the surface with an agent which permeates. the deteriorated layer and dissolves a portion of the plastics material adjacent the layer whereby the deteriorated layer is removed to provide a new surface, a layer of which is dissolved in the agent, drying the article at a temperature and for a period sufficient to evaporate the agent from the dissolved layer and to redeposit the dissolved plastics on the surface and heating the article to a temperature below the melting point thereof for a period sufficient to relief stresses developed in the re-finished surface during the said drying. After contacting the surface of the plastics article with the contacting agent and prior to the drying step, the article may be maintained in a substantially saturated atmosphere of the vapours of the agent for a time sufficient to allow the agent coating to have a uniform concentration of dissolved plastics therethrough. The agent may be 65 to 100% by volume of dichloromethane and 35 to 0% by volume of trichlorotrifluoroethane of 40 to 100% by volume of dichloromethane and from 60 to 0% by volume of 1, 1, 1-trichloroethane. The drying step may be in two stages, first at e.g., 35 to 50‹C. and then at ambient temperature.
