Abstract

1,165,158. Testing strength of pipes &c. STELMO Ltd. and P.L. RAWLINSON. Oct. 19, 1966 [Dec. 16, 1965], No.53499/65. Heading G1S. A pipe or hollow vessel testing apparatus comprises a metal frame or block bed 11, slidably supporting plattens 17, 18 between which the pipe under test may be clamped for filling with water under pressure. The plattens are each rubber faced and mounted on trolleys 19 so that they may be moved by hydraulic pistons and cylinders 25, 24 and 28, 29, and the pipe may be lowered by crane or side rolled on to supports 56 which are hydraulically adjustable vertically and horizontally slidable. The platten 17 may be locked in position by a hydraulically operated pin 27 entering a hole 26. In operation the pipe is clamped at its ends between the plattens and water is then pumped into the pipe via a low-pressure pump 45 and pipes 36, 35 through the face of the platten 18, pumping being continued until overflow takes place through pipes 37, 38, Fig. 2. A solenoid valve 50 is then actuated to cause water from a second but highpressure pump 46 to fill the pipe and raise the pressure to 20 lbs. p.s. inch. When this pressure is reached the valve 50 is shut and a bell rings for 30 seconds during which time pressure is maintained and the pipe inspected for leaks.
