1,165,122. Purification of 2,6-dimethyl phenol. KOPPERS CO. Inc. 1 Jan., 1968, No. 186/68. Heading C2C. A process for purifying an impure 2,6- dimethyl-phenol mixture containing close boiling monomethylphenols by distillation comprises methylating the mixture to convert the close boiling monomethyl phenols to higher boiling polymethyl-phenols before distilling the mixture. The methylation may be carried out using methanol in the presence of aluminium oxide catalyst at a temperature in the range of from 250-875‹ C.
